The way Cervical Screening is done in Aotearoa is changing with the introduction of HPV testing as the primary screening test.
From September 2023, you now have the option of doing a self swab.
The “old way” will still need to be used in certain circumstances but you now have the option to do it yourself or we can assist.
For those who are uncomfortable with having a cervical sample taken (what used to be called a smear test) or who have put off getting screened, the new test will be less invasive. The option to self-test also means that some who have been hesitant to get screened, may be more inclined to do so.
The HPV test is very accurate at detecting HPV which causes more than 95% of cervical cancers.
